CAPTURING YOUR HAIKU

Often I’ll forget a poem before I write it down.  What should I do?

The experience of losing track of you poem before you’ve written it down is very common.

I'll share with you a personal experience.  A close friend gave me a book about writing haiku.  The author mentioned that he carried a small notebook with him at all times—and recommended the same for the readers.  I immediately thought "how dorky" ... until i found myself doing the same thing!  I have small notebooks easily accessible day or night:  in my purse, in my car, plus a notebook in several rooms in our house.  Granted, it takes a little while to compile the poems from all of these notebooks, but it's a vast improvement over grabbing scraps of paper, or writing on the backs of receipts and envelopes.

And when I say small notebooks, I mean small.  Most of mine are about

3" x 5".  I prefer spiral-bound notebooks because they're easier to write in since you don't have to hold the notebook open with one hand while writing with the other hand.

Another idea is to send yourself text messages regarding poems, via your cell phone.
